I love this time of year! Last year around this time, we had chosen such a perfect book to read during the Holiday season and Let it Snow by John Green, Lauren Myracle and Maureen Johnson was such an amazing choice. Reading it really got us into the holiday spirit and so we wanted to find something along the same theme. The December book of the month this year will be What Light by Jay Asher! We were in awe with Thirteen Reasons Why, one of his previous novels, and so when we heard that he wrote a Christmas novel, we were hooked. The story is about a girl named Sierra and how her and her family leave Oregon to go to California every year around Christmas so that they can set up their Christmas tree lot. She’s used to keeping both her life in Oregon and her life in California separate until she meets Caleb. We are so excited to read this one!

I love reading books involving Christmas this time of year. What other books are you guys planning on reading over the Holidays?
Book of the Month!
The book for last month was amazing and I would gladly pick another read with a dark atmosphere but it’s been two months in a row and it’s probably time for something different. This month, we’ve decided to go with an LGBT YA contemporary. The November book of the month is going to be Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit by Jaye Robin Brown. In this book, we follow Joanna on her move to Rome, Georgia with her family. While she is out and proud, her father asks her for a favor. Since he is a well-known radio evangelist and their new home is within a very conservative community, he asks her to lay low at least until the end of the school year. She agrees to do that for him but things get complicated when she’s introduced to Mary Carlson. What will she choose, keeping her word or following her heart? I’ve seen a lot of good reviews on this one and I’m really excited to read it! I will be posting my Book Club review on November 25th if anyone wants to read along and write your thoughts in the comments section! Book of the Month! I know that we’ve already gone through the darker route last month with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children but with Halloween running toward us, we wanted to jump in a, possibly even darker, world of fantasy. We’ve chosen to read Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake as our October book of the month! In a world where triplets are born in every generation, three girls are equally in line for the throne. Mirabella has powerful elemental powers that can control fire and wind. Katherine is able to consume the most deadly poisons yet still survive and Arsinoe can manipulate plants and control the most dangerous animals. At the age of 16, war begins as they fight for the crown. What one doesn’t know though is that the other two girls have been faking their powers. With alliances and betrayals taking place, who will be the darkest queen? I can’t wait to read this one. It’s been on my radar the moment it was announced and it’s been on my shelf waiting for me to start reading it today! New segments!
We’re still working on our new segments! It’s been a very busy September with work picking up but they will definitely happen in October! I’m going to be starting a diary-style weekly book chat while my friends B and Cat will be joining the blog writing with their own segment on book to movie/TV series adaptations. We have new title images for them and everything! It’s going to be great! Blog Anniversary! October 12th will mark the one year anniversary of my first blog post! It will have been one whole year since I’ve started my book blog and I feel like it’s gone such a long way. I can’t wait to make the next year even better! Book of the Month! I’m so excited to announce that this month, we will have Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs as our Book of the Month! We’ve all been so excited to see the movie when it comes out on September 30th and when we realized that it was an unread book we all had in common, we felt like it was such a perfect idea! To add to the perfectness of this, the day of its movie release falls on the last Friday of this month so not only will we have a book review to give you guys, but we will also be adding a bit of a book/movie comparison! I will admit that when I first saw the cover of this book, it seemed a bit creepy and I’ve never been too good with creepy but it seems to be another case of not judging a book by its cover because I hear such amazing things about it. I can’t wait for September 30th! Oh and don’t worry. We won’t be spoiling anything about the movie. We’re probably just going to say if we liked it or if we thought it gave the book justice. It would be the first day of its release and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. New weekly segment!
I’m going to be starting a new segment soon. I feel like I’ve been doing pretty well on my blog deadlines when it comes to the monthly announcement or book club but I also feel like I should add something weekly. With something weekly, it will push me to post more and that’s what I want to do. It’s almost been a year that I’ve created this blog and I’ve grown tired of only doing book tags and reviews. It’s starting to feel a bit robotic and so I came up with a great idea for a segment. Once I have everything figured out, I will be posting Monday Book Chat. It will give me a chance to be more personal with you guys while writing in sort of like a diary format. I will discuss about my thoughts that week about books I’m thinking of buying, books I’m unsure of, and other things book related. Mostly, it’ll be a place where I can just talk to you guys. Drink coffee and chat. Let me know if you guys think it’s a good idea! Book of the Month!
I’d like to start off by saying thank you to everyone who participated in the Mid-Summer Madness Scavenger Hunt! It was really fun to place a bunch of little Jaxon pictures all over the blog and even more fun to read your book suggestions for August’s Book of the Month! We ended up having our draw on July 28th and the book that was chosen sounds like it’ll be a pretty interesting read. The winner of Mid-Summer Madness is Alex L and our Book of the Month for August will be Famous Last Words by Katie Alender! Famous Last Words is said to be quite the murder mystery. There’s a killer on the loose in Los Angeles who likes to act out murder scenes from famous movies. On the other hand, Willa has been having really weird visions. She keeps seeing things that shouldn’t be there. Could these “visions” be trying to send her a message? Does it having something to do with what’s going on around LA? It’s been a while since we’ve read a thriller and we’re really looking forward to reading this one! Our review will be posted on August 26th if you'd like to come check it out. Reading Challenges! At the beginning of the year, I felt really ambitious. It was my first year out of University and I thought I would have so much time that I could put toward reading tons and tons of books. I’ve always been a dreamer and so I’ve always had so many projects on the go and things that I want to do. Sometimes I can get a little too ambitious and when this happens, I later realize that I can’t do everything all at once. Last January, I thought it would be cool to set two different reading challenges for myself. I had started one on Goodreads and then I’ve seen one someone on Pinterest and thought, why not try this too! On that note, I have made the personal decision to only continue the year with the Goodreads Reading Challenge. I’ve wanted to do the other one too but with everything going on in my life, it started to stress me out and where’s the fun in reading when you start to feel stressed doing it? Have any of you felt this way? Maybe next year, instead of starting with multiple reading challenges, I’ll try bringing my Goodreads Challenge up a bit higher in number. Book of the Month!
For July, I’d like to announce that our Book of the Month will be The Jewel by Amy Ewing. This book really caught our attention and sounds like it could be quite intriguing. I did look it up however and have noticed a lot of not-so-great ratings but most of them are based on it having too much romance that it had ruined the plot. Being someone who loves dystopia and romance, I’d like to check it out and see what my opinion will be and my two book club friends think similarly. Who knows, maybe we will love it! I’ve also read that it could be for fans of The Selection but with a darker style so that sounds super cool! The story is about a girl named Violet who gets purchased at a surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake in the Jewel of the Lone City. Her sole purpose is to aid in carrying a healthy heir and continue the royal bloodline but she merely seen as an object, one that can be disposed of. Hating the terrible treatment, she finds some shred of light through the appearance of Ash Lockwood. But their romance is a forbidden one and what can she do in order to find her freedom and escape the brutality of the Jewel? The Book of the Month review will be posted on July 29th this month. Come check it out! July’s Mid-Month Post! For July, I decided to try something different for the blog’s Mid-Month post. Instead of a post about anything book-related, I’ve decided to create a game! I’m calling it Mid-Summer Madness and I’m really excited to set it up and see how it goes. The winner will be the one who gets to choose what our book of the month for August will be! I will explain everything on July 15th so come check it out! 2016 Reading Challenge! 16/40 These are what I was able to add to the list last month. I feel like now there are mostly genres that I'm not too familiar with left on the list so I hope I won't have too much trouble completing the challenge.
Happy Canada Day! Book of the Month!
I’m super happy to announce that June’s Book of the Month will be Firstlife by Gena Showalter! This book sounds super unique and interesting. The story is about a world where you start off by living your firstlife. Before you die, you have to make a choice between two different realms in the Everlife, which is where they go after they die. Both of these realms are at war with one another and a girl known as Ten is known to have what they need in order to win the war. Ten however, is unsigned. She hasn’t decided if she wants to go to Troika or Myriad yet. Both realms send people to try to lure her to choose their own sides but without knowing who to trust, where will she choose? Come check out our Book of the Month review on June 24th! You can now subscribe to my Newsletter! I’m surprised that I haven’t done this sooner but I’ve officially added a spot on my blog where you can subscribe by email for my Newsletter. In doing this, I will be able to keep you posted on what’s happening here at Paperback Darling. I’ve decided that, so you don’t get bombarded my too many emails, I will only be sending out two newsletters per month; one on the 1st along with the Monthly Announcement and one on the 15th along with the Mid-Month Post. It would be awesome to have you join up! I’m getting another OwlCrate Subscription Box! Though I absolutely loved my April OwlCrate Box, I didn’t think that I would be purchasing another one so soon due to how pricey it can be with Canada shipping. After I saw that the theme for June’s box is Royalty, it just had to happen. I’ve mentioned before that I am a total sucker for books involving royalty and I am super excited for this one. They’ve already given two hints as to what can be added in the box and these are things that just add to the anticipation. Being a huge fan of magnetic bookmarks, one of the items will be an exclusive bookmark created by Craftedvan along with a mystery mini from Funko! The wait is real. If you guys want to check it out, here’s my referral link! New Facebook and Twitter You’ve probably noticed that I have added a new Facebook page as well as a Twitter page. With work being very demanding as I’m always traveling, my friend Cat was super nice to have helped put everything together! Though she will be doing a lot of the posting, I will still be around to share news with you guys. It’s awesome to have her as part of the Paperback Darling team! I love recommendations! So far, I’ve had a few authors asking me to read their books for an honest review and I’ve also been given recommendations by some of you guys. I would just like to take this chance to let you know that I do take your recommendations to heart. If you’re an author and would like an honest review from me, I will be doing the best I can to read it relatively quickly and I will be completely honest with you. Also, If any of you guys feel like there’s a book that you truly believe I would love but I just so happen to not have seen it yet, please let me know! I will be adding a Review Policy to my blog very shortly and I’m excited to hear more from you guys. 2016 Reading Challenge! 14/40 The list is starting to get long now so I will be only adding the new additions to the list!
Book of the Month!
I am very excited to announce that we will be reading The Way Back to You by Michelle Andreani and Mindi Scott for May’s Book of the Month! I’m incredibly excited for this one as you could have seen with my April Book Haul post! We all agreed that with the official release of this novel being in a few days, it was a good idea to make it as our book of the month choice. It probably helped that I kept going on and on about how excited I was during April’s book club meet-up… The story follows the unfortunate passing of Ashlyn and the discovery that she had saved three strangers by donating her organs. Ashlyn's best friend and boyfriend decide to go on a road trip and find them to see if maybe it will give them a sort of closure after so much heartbreak. I’m actually kind of nervous too about reading this one now. I feel like I got so excited that I might have overhyped it for myself. We’ll have to see what I think on May 27th! I hope to hear what you guys think of this one! I'm Being Featured in Another Book Blog! I was contacted by fellow book blogger Balie from Novelers to see if I’d be interested in answering some questions for a post on her blog. She’s doing this really interesting weekly post called Tea with the Blogger, where she interviews a different blogger every week. I believe my post might be the one for tomorrow! You'll have to come check it out! Balie is a new book blogger full of ideas. She’s already talked to me about a bunch of different posts that she plans on making. With Tea of the Blogger, she also created this new Readathon titled Tackle That TBR. We probably all have something in common and that’s a growing TBR list so I think this is a very cool idea. You could check out that page right here with all of the information. 2016 Reading Challenge! 11/40
Book of the Month! We had a very interesting suggestion given to us by B's girlfriend this month. She thinks we will enjoy The Unquiet Past by Kelley Armstrong and so we thought we would give it a go! I've always wanted to read one of Kelly Armstrong's books and so this will give me the opportunity to get to know her writing style. From what I've read so far, the story revolves around a woman named Tess as she's trying to find out the truth about herself. She feels as though something is wrong with her and so she digs deep within her past and figures out more about her family. I was told that this book has a sort of supernatural feel to it and it's been a while since I read something like this. I'm really looking forward to it. Catch our review on April 29th! I Met Kristan Cannon! In March, I had the opportunity to meet Canadian Author Kristan Cannon. I had reviewed her book After Oil recently and she liked what I had said about her wonderful debut. We met at a Starbucks briefly and I got the chance to hear more about her work and her upcoming projects. I wish her lots of luck in her future endeavors and I can't wait to read more of her upcoming titles. Thank you again for a signed copy of After Oil! The new paperback edition looks great! 2016 Reading Challenge! 8/40
Book of the Month!
Having skipped the contemporary theme last month, we have chosen a contemporary novel to be this month’s read. I’ve only heard of I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson recently and I keep hearing different opinions on it. Some people have told me that the ending made the book but others say it was the story itself though the ending was lacking. I’d like to see what my opinion of this book will be and I’d like to hear what you guys think as well. I hear a lot of good things and it has won many awards since its release. The story is about twin siblings, Jude and Noah, and how their relationship changes in only a few years. The story takes place in two different time periods. At thirteen years old, we follow through Noah’s point of view. At sixteen years old, we follow the story through his sister’s eyes. At sixteen, something must have happened because they are no longer as close as they once were. I’m excited to read this one, I hear it’s a very refreshing story and I’m looking forward to it. 2016 Reading Challenge! 5/40
