Since it was the “Once upon a Dream” themed box, OwlCrate mentioned that it would be a box for those who love fairy-tales such as Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz. One of OwlCrate’s new touches is that they add little button pins that match the card introducing the theme and the items in the box. The card seems to have a darker atmosphere which is really cool with Halloween on the way. The most notable item in my box was this really comfy Peter Pan beanie from Whosits & Whatsits. It’s a little big on me but it’s so comfy and adorable with the feather on the side. I also received a cute little notepad that looks like a The Wizard of Oz themed passport from The Unemployed Philosopher’s Guild. It’s really detailed too all decked out with travelers tips that really make you laugh. There’s a pretty little fabric button bookmark by My Heart My Trip and while mine is black and white strips, I hear there were many other designs sent out which I though was a very nice touch.
As for the book, to fit the theme and dark atmosphere, OwlCrate included a book inspired by a tale in Russian folklore. Vassa in the Night is about a hard-working girl who lives with her stepmother and stepsisters. Late one night, Vassa is sent out to get light bulbs at the nearest convenience store but knows that it can possibly go terribly wrong. The owner is Babs Yagg and Vassa knows she should never go on her bad side as she’s known to behead any shoplifters. With the help of her magical friend, a living wooden doll, will she able to get back home in one piece? I looked up the story that it’s based on and it’s a really interesting choice for a retelling. I’m excited to see where Sarah Porter will go with this story. Not only did the book come with a hand-written note by the author, but it came with a signed bookplate and a really cool temporary tattoo!
What do you guys think of the October box?
Doesn’t the next one sound absolutely amazing??
P.S. Are there any other book subscription boxes that you guys think I should look into next? Please let me know in the comments below!
