“It’s the sorrow you feel that allows you to crave love. Without the suffering, there would be no true pleasure. Without tears, no joy. Without deficiency, no longing. This is the secret of the human heart, Rom.” – Forbidden by Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee
Rom was having a normal day until an older man approached him with something that will change his life forever. Centuries before, a new order was made so that violence and war would never occur. Not only did they ban all weapons but they had found a way to stop humans from feeling emotions such as love and anger. They were left with fear and the new order they had to follow. In the present time, Rom was given a vial of blood that, if consumed, emotions that have been lost for so long will breathe life into him. Without these emotions, they are considered dead as they do not know what living is meant to feel like. This book follows Rom’s journey along with his friends as they stray from the order so that they could find the truth.
When I started this book, I loved that it started out with a bit of a history lesson as this is taken place way in the future. The author described what happened after the war and why it happened very clearly. I absolutely loved the way he described emotion. I would have thought it would be difficult to describe the feelings a person would have without them having ever felt those feelings before. I could understand how mad they would seem to others who have never felt such crazy emotions. It really makes you think.
The whole concept was fascinating and it kept me drawn in as a reader. I wanted to know more about this vial and what was going to happen to the world after its discovery. I can’t even start to imagine how I would react if I was given feasible proof that our world is really dead and the only way I could truly live is to follow a new path that is against what I’ve known my whole life. I could see the struggle that these characters go through not only to figure out the truth but also to fight with their own morals and views within themselves.
