All Diana wants is to fit in with her Amazon sisters. She wants to prove to everyone that she’s not as weak as they perceived and she aims to make her mother proud. When she witnesses an explosion in the waters close to the island, she hears the scream of a girl and without second thought, breaking Amazon law, she follows the sound and saves her. Now risking exile, she now faces uncertainty as the girl she saved isn’t an ordinary mortal. Alia is a Warbringer and she just might doom the island and the world. The story follows both Diana and Alia as they rush to their only hope in saving the world, all while facing many challenges along the way.
This book was a really cool take on the origin story of Wonder Woman. This was my first time reading a book by Leigh Bardugo and after hearing so many amazing things about how amazingly written and well-developed her other books are, such as Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom as a few examples, I was really excited to see where she would go with this story. She created quite the cast of strong characters and I loved reading about Diana’s experience walking the streets of our more modern society for the first time. It was such a fun adventure and I loved that no matter what, our characters never gave up and kept going. Though there were some parts that didn’t feel as though they connected to the plot and the seriousness that was their mission, they were quickly forgiven as I got closer to the end of the book and all I have to say is: I did NOT see ANY of that coming. I was blown away, scared for the worst, worried for the characters and in a whirlwind of emotions. She really knows how to write an ending.
I’m giving this wonderful book a 4 out of 5 rating!
Which one do you guys think I should start with: Six of Crows or Shadow and Bone?
