I was a little worried about this month’s choice but mainly because Mystery isn’t a genre I generally read. But that’s what our Book Club goal is this year; it’s to explore a different genre every month and who knows, maybe we’ll be introduced to a genre we’ve never read before and be pleasantly surprised? I’m hoping mystery is one of those for me. I have read maybe one or two but they’ve always been for school but this pick sounds really interesting and I’m looking forward to giving it a shot! Our pick this month is The Lake House by Kate Morton! Living on a beautiful lakeside estate, Alice’s family had planned a big party with hundreds of people attending only to realize after the party’s end that their young toddler had disappeared. Alice had always liked writing mysteries but she never expected to be a part of one. Decades after the incident, the case of Theo’s disappearance was never solved and so while stumbling upon the old estate, detective Sadie Sparrow decides to investigate. Will Alice and Sadie find the answers they seek? I’ve heard wonderful things about Kate Morton’s books and I can’t wait to see what everyone thinks of this one on June 30th!

I thought it would be fun to do another book tag but this time with a fellow blogger! Hope @ Amethyst Blue and I had chosen to go with the Bookshelf Scavenger Hunt tag, originally by Sarah @ TheLibraryOfSarah, because we thought it would be so interesting looking for these book traits within two different book collections! I've posted my book finds below but you should definitely check out what she found on her blog! I'll post the link right here. Find an author's name or title with the letter Z in it. Gem & Dixie by Sara Zarr This was a wonderful read about two sisters who have grown up in a broken home and who are trying to find themselves. In this book, they really get to test their sisterly bond and you never know if their journey will bring them closer or further apart. Find a book with a key on it. The Key of Light by Nora Roberts It might be difficult seeing the key in this photo but it's right in the center of it in a lighter shade of blue. It's there; I swear! Find something on your bookshelf that is not a book. Claire Fraser Funko Pop Figure I love decorating my bookshelves with Funko Pop Figures! I'm still dreaming of one day getting myself the Jamie Fraser one but it seems to be in the 100$-200$ range right now online and I personally don't really want to spend that much money on a figurine. Find the oldest book on your shelf. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer I actually wasn't much of a reader before my second year in High School. A friend of mine introduced me to Twilight and I was hooked and it was then that I started to buy more and more books. It might not be the the oldest in terms of when it was released but it is the first YA book that I've ever owned. Find a book with a girl on the cover. Flawed by Cecelia Ahern This is such an amazing series! It's a very interesting dystopian world! I've written a series review, if you'd like to go check it out! Find a book that has an animal in it. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater I had a hard time trying to find one with an animal in it. This one has werewolves in it though so would it count? Find a book with a male protagonist. Half Bad by Sally Green I personally don't own too many books with a male protagonist but I do own a copy of Half Bad! It was so good and I'm looking forward to reading Half Wild soon! Find a book with only words on it. Not if I See You First by Eric Lindstrom Not only does it have words, but it has braille as well! I thought that was pretty neat! Find a book with illustrations in it. Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia Technically, it's not on my bookshelf yet but it's on the way! It's one of my most anticipated reads for the summer and I can't wait to read it! Find a book with gold lettering. A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi This has such a beautiful cover and I honestly can't get over it. Find a diary. Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch This book. I am so sad that they moved the release date of the second book from August 2017 to May 2018 because I just can't wait that long. This book was the perfect light read and it would be fantastic for the summer if you're looking for something light and sweet. Find a book written by someone with a common name like Smith. Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit by Jaye Robin Brown This is another great contemporary that I highly recommend! We read it for book club once and everyone enjoyed it! You can check out the review here. Find a book that has a close up of something on it. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black This stand-alone is such an awesome take on vampires! Find a book that takes place in the earliest time period. Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken At first, I wasn't sure what to put here but then I realized I have a few books that involve time travel. This book goes way back in the past!
Find a teal/turquoise colored book. Firstlife by Gena Showalter I'm in love with this series! It's one that only gets better and better so if you haven't read it yet, you're really missing out! You should definitely go check out my review! Find a book with stars on it. The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle I didn't think I had a book with stars on it at first and when I remembered that I had this book, I just had to take a moment to really look at the amazing art work. Find a non-YA book. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes I've only just started to get into New-Adult books this year and this one was absolutely beautiful. If you'd like to check out my review for it, I'll post it right here! I had so much fun looking between both of our picks! If this is the first time you've heard of Hope's blog, she is a wonderful blogger and writes a lot of amazing reviews. You should definitely go have a look and subscribe!
Tag, you're it! "See that smoke curling up from the end of her lipstick-stained, ultra-long, ultra-light? It's rising isn't it? You're goddamned right it's rising, and that's a good thing. Even something as dirty and useless as smoke gets to rise. There's hope everywhere.’’ – The Helper by M.N. Snow (I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.) From a very young age, John realizes he possesses an innate ability to Help people in huge, life-altering ways. He still remembers the exact moment he Helped someone for the first time. Now in his thirties, when his divine connection to the Light unexpectedly shatters, so does his very self. With the sudden departure of his lover Deena, John suddenly faces the dark prospect of a meaningless, empty existence. How will John navigate his way through life without the Light? This was such a refreshing read. It was mystical and moving, with a dark type of humor. I found the unique and abstract combination of spiritual elements and down-to-earth banter to be truly captivating. The narrator was enthusiastic and I loved that each character had their own unique voice. The novel touched on major issues such as abandonment, war, and racism; it truly held nothing back. It became obvious very early on that this book is destined for mature (18+) audiences, and some people might even be offended by the crude descriptions and almost constant use of profanities. However, I feel that without this undignified aspect, the book would lose some of its realness. It was an intense and emotional read, but what surprised me the most was the wisdom that it delivered. If you’re in need of a stimulating read that will make you reflect on humanity and the power of good, I absolutely recommend this book. I give this book a rating of 4.5 feathers! BOOK & AUTHOR INFO: The Way Back Home by Carmen Jenner Genre: Military Romance Publication date: May 29, 2017 Goodreads Synopsis: August Cotton shouldn’t be here. When a tragic accident calls him home to Magnolia Springs, this returned Veteran adds his parents to the list of things he’s lost in recent years, right along with his IED detection dog and his left leg. As the sole guardian of his four-year-old sister, August must rely on his Marine training in raising a tiny hellion who’s as stubborn as he is. But the Corps could never prepare him for this. Nor could they prepare him for Olivia Anders, a woman who’ll stop at nothing to get her way. As owner of Paws for Cause, Olivia is no stranger to the broken men and women who return home from war. She’s no stranger to broken dogs either. In fact, she’s made it her mission to pair the two and enrich both of their lives, but pairing ornery and aloof August Cotton will take some work. The last thing August wants is some pushy southern woman occupying his parents’ bed and breakfast and forcing him to open up about the hell he narrowly escaped, but that’s exactly what Olivia intends. They complete one another, and yet they can’t stand to be in the same room. Can Olivia make this hardened Marine feel again and finally show his heart the way back home? *** Intended for a mature 18+ audience only. This book may contain triggers for some readers. “War doesn’t end when a Marine returns home to U.S. soil. For some, it’s just the beginning.” – The Way Back Home by Carmen Jenner (I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.) After having read Harley & Rose and absolutely loving it, I couldn't wait to read this new release! This book was stunning from prologue to epilogue. These characters felt so real and I laughed and cried so many times reading the hilarious and deep moments that the characters share. I read this in two sittings and if I didn’t have to sleep, it would have been one. At first, they couldn’t stand each other and the way they just loved to push each other’s buttons made it that much more entertaining. The romance between the two was so swoon-worthy at moments and so heart-breaking at others, especially with what they’ve gone through and still are enduring. I feel like the biggest message in this story is holding on to hope even if it’s just a spark. The smallest of sparks can ignite the biggest flames. The story has military romance, surprising friendships and an overall wonderful plot-line where a man and a woman, while thinking they don’t need saving, might just find solace where they least expect it. I highly recommend this book and give it a rating of 5 out of 5 feathers! YOU CAN PURCHASE IT HERE: EXCERPT: The Way Back Home Text Copyright © 2017 Carmen Jenner All Rights Reserved “Are we going to ignore it forever?” The words are sharper than I intend, and they slice through the silence as if they were a roar, bitter and bruised with frustration. His whole body stills. “No.” “Then why won’t you say something?” “What am I supposed to say?” he shoots back, equally as angry, and I’m stunned for a second, because it’s he who walked away, it’s he who’s been avoiding me, and he who seems to be perfectly fine, while I’m the one feeling like I just handed him my heart and he stomped all over it. “What do you want to say?” I snap. “Obviously, you’re angry with me. You can’t even look at me. You haven’t looked at me since—” “I can’t stop looking at you,” he hisses. “It’s all I’ve done since you got here, seen you and nothing else.” “Then what?” I plead. “What aren’t you saying?” “I’m terrified, okay?” he shouts, standing up and slamming his fist down on the table. I flinch. Zora sits up and growls. “I’m absolutely fucking terrified.” “Of what?” “Of you, of this.” Author Bio: Carmen Jenner Carmen Jenner is a thirty-something, USA Today and international bestselling author. No pain, only fear – for him. I think it was then that the revolution began. Not for Paris or for the French. But for me.” – Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly Andie Alpers is grieving the loss of her younger brother. With her mother not handling it too well and her father who had already walked out on them, she’s angry at the world and at herself. No longer taking school seriously, she’s now close to being expelled from a highly regarded school. Her father hears the news and takes control by bringing her to Paris with him. There, she finds a diary written by Alexandrine Paradis from two centuries back. Though she doesn’t know her, she feels a connection with this girl and she constantly finds herself drawn to the book. Something about Alex’s story calls to her and won’t let go. At first, I had a hard time connecting to the main character. Her overall personality seemed rude and unapproachable but I guess being as guarded as she is after what happened, I wouldn’t have pictured her any other way. It took me a while but she eventually grew on me and you can tell how her time in Paris changes her through every new, sometimes creepy and illusory experiences. I loved Alex’s’ story. I looked forward to reading her diary entries and finding out what truly happened to her and the prince. The last part of the book was truly unexpected. I actually had my own theory of what might have happened involving the connection of the characters and I can honestly say that I was so wrong and I loved Jennifer Donnelly’s ending much more. It was definitely a book that felt a bit slower-paced at the beginning but the more you read it, the more you wanted to know and we could say that, just like how Andi was captivated by the entries, we were definitely drawn in. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves historical fiction and the French Revolution! We give this book a rating of 4.5 out of 5 feathers! Mel.

“I collapsed into one of the leather reading chairs. ‘If I’m going to crack the code, it’s going to mean more than just making this my career. If I’m to find what I’m looking for, I’m going to have to reassume Ken’s career.’ I looked up at the portrait of Professor Scott, hanging over the wall clock. ‘That’s a legacy I’m going to have to earn.’” – The House on Sagamore Road by Cary Marc Grossman (I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.) With the fire at Sagamore Road behind them, Tess still strongly feels like something is up and their problems are nowhere near over. While everyone else feigns ignorance, Tess is determined to find the origin of their story and what they need to know in order to protect themselves. Will it be enough when their family ties seem presently fragile? Will they find their way back to each other in time to stop the past from repeating itself? Before I get into my review, I would like to warn you guys that there will be polyamorous and erotic elements within the story. The polyamory caught me a bit off guard but that’s because I’ve never really read a book with that kind of relationship before. I will mention though that without these relationships, it most likely wouldn’t stay true to the myth and the world that he is portraying. I loved that we got to see more through Tess’s point of view in this one and I felt like I really connected with her. I had so many questions in the first book while I was trying to connect the dots and she was definitely one to seek the truth so I truly enjoyed following her point of view the most so far. When it comes to the illusions and how time doesn’t necessarily exist at the house on Sagamore Road, you would think it would be complicated after a while with so many past memories coming to play and seeing a lot of different time fragments but the author does wonderfully in the sense that I don’t recall ever feeling lost. Even though there were quite some creepy and gory moments, I was fascinated every time they made a discovery involving the origin of the Viracocha. Everything about the Egyptian legends and how it ties with astronomy was nothing short of fascinating. It’s all an elaborate puzzle that they have to figure out. I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 feathers and to celebrate its release, I’ve included a short interview with the author along with an eBook giveaway where you have a chance to win yourself a copy of Chopin’s Ghost! Interview with Cary Marc Crossman!
1. What was the initial moment where everything clicked and you simply knew writing was what you wanted to do? It was sometime during the writing of my first book, Chopin’s Ghost. I was thirty-eight and reading had been my favorite pastime for years and years, but I’d never written anything. I had no previous writing experience, and I knew that a novel was the equivalent of climbing Everest, but I knew I had a good idea for a book and didn’t have the patience for anything except diving right in and learning as I went. I knew it would take a long time, but the one advantage I had was having read enough great books to know a good one when I saw one. It took me ten years, as reading a novel and writing one are very different things, but it was very early on that I became addicted to it. Once I was finished with Ghost, I knew I had to find another story to tell right away. I’d gotten used to my fix and needed another one immediately. 2. Astronomy and Egyptian legends are such fascinating topics. How long do you spend researching before writing your book? I’d been into astronomy ever since I was in my late twenties, and saw Carl Sagan’s Cosmos series. Got myself a small refractor scope, saw the rings on a tiny image of Saturn, and that was that. I was about the same age when I read Fingerprints of the Gods, by Graham Hancock. I’d always been fascinated with the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, and Hancock’s book was a summary of the most groundbreaking research of Egyptian monuments, and other wondrous sites. So I already had a good knowledge of those subjects when I realized that they’d fit wonderfully into Chopin’s Ghost and its sequel, The House on Sagamore Road. I do the rest of my research as I go along. I always fly blind when I write—no synopsis beforehand, so I research as I go. In the case of Chopin, however, I did extensive research. I’d always loved his music, so it was a joy to learn about him. But I had years to work with, as it took almost a decade to finish the book. 3. I find every writer has his or her own writing process. Do you write your drafts mostly on paper or do you type it out on the computer? I work mostly on the computer, as it’s just so much easier to edit—it still stuns me that people like Thomas Wolfe wrote such massive, epic works as Look Homeward, Angel Longhand. I’ll sometimes work longhand if I’m away from the computer, or if I get tunnel-vision and just need a change. But it’s so much easier to change things on computer, move them around, put them aside and bring them back later. I’m too spoiled! 4. If you could pick one of your own characters, in any of your books, who would you say you relate to the most? I relate to all my major characters, both male and female. Robin, Suze, Angie, and Tess from the Chopin’s Ghost trilogy, and Benjamin Scream and Honey Clarke from Honey. They’ve all had their lives pulled out from under them in some way, and spend years trying to deal with it. My own life has crashed several times and each time I’ve had to pick up and start over from scratch. This happens to many people, and I enjoy exploring it in my books. Some people are resilient and can stand up and move on. Others are more sensitive and wear the scars more visibly. Many people are damaged in some way, but the human spirit is an amazing thing. We find a way to keep going. 5. What is a book you would highly recommend to all of your fans? For fiction, anything by John Irving or Graham Joyce. I saw Some Kind of Fairy Tale in the library one afternoon, and by the end of the first page said to myself, “I have to read everything this man’s ever written.” Sadly, we lost Graham Joyce. But I have read everything he’s written. Your chance to win an eBook copy of Chopin's Ghost! Go to CONTACT and leave me a message with your preferred eBook format! You have until midnight on June 6th to enter! P.S. You can leave a comment below for an additional entry! “‘What’s done is done.’ He gives an almost imperceptible shake of his head as he backs away from me. ‘If I fight for you, I help my realm lose the war. If I fight against you, I lose you. There’s no middle ground. Not with us. Like you, I have to choose.’” – Lifeblood by Gena Showalter (I received a copy from Wunderkind PR in exchange for an honest review.) Lifeblood is the second installment in the Everlife Trilogy by Gena Showalter. It starts right where it left off and when you feel like you had a full grasp on the world you were introduced to in the first book, there is so much more left to see. Tenley Lockwood has finally made a choice and the war she was meant to help fight has already begun. On one side, she has her new loyalties and her new family; on the other, she has her competition with her heart in hand. Ten has yet another choice to make but time is running out fast. I fell in love with Firstlife. It was an absolute favorite of mine last year and so when I had the opportunity to read Lifeblood, I was ecstatic! It had exceeded my expectations and is, in my opinion, even better than its predecessor! It’s such a quick read with so many plot twists that keep you at the edge of your seat. The action never stops and while she’s trying to figure out how she could truly harness her light, you find yourself puzzling through the many ways she might be able to crack the code that is her gift. There are so many secrets and you are left wondering who she could trust and who might betray her to win such a life-long war. In the first one, I thought I had a good idea of what both realms were like but now that Ten is within one, I now see that I only had a glimpse. Her world-building is phenomenal and I can’t get enough of this series. I give this book a 5 out of 5 rating but it really deserves a TEN! I can’t believe I have to wait a whole year to read Everlife! May 16th, 2017 What I'm listening to: Tell me How by Paramore (Loving their new album!) Drink of the day: Iced Coffee How I'm feeling: Gullible So my boyfriend thought it would be hilarious to not prank me once, but twice this week. He’s able to keep such a serious face that I fell for it both times. I had to go for an ultrasound to look at a bump on my head (don’t worry, it was just in case and I’m alright!) and so he convinced me for a good 20-30 minutes that they were going to have to shave a spot on my head so that they can proceed with the ultrasound. I thought he was lying at first but when he wouldn’t budge and kept saying he’s serious, I started to freak out over the loss of a patch of hair, especially with his sister’s wedding this summer! I planned on having a beautiful updo and would hate for it to show! Once he told me he was kidding, I felt so dumb and was so mad at him for making me stress over it for a good half hour. By then, I had enough of pranks for a good while but he must have thought differently. I came home the next day to find all of my bookshelf decorations facing the opposite direction. At first I thought it was curious and asked him why he moved everything. I will never trust that serious look of his again! He claimed he had no idea what I was talking about and that he hasn’t touched anything. Thinking back now, I should have known better but for a good 10 minutes he kept trying to tell me not to play him and that I must have been the one to move them around, thus trying to prank him back from the previous day. After a good 10 minutes, I thought this was way super creepy and I declared that I will not be sleeping in that room that night because this is obviously like a scene in a ghost movie. I started to pack and he burst out laughing. Needless to say guys, I have lost total trust. He messed with my bookshelf. This. Means. War. I’m trying to think of ways to get him back for this. If you guys can think of anything, please let me know! Exhibit A This is what I came home to. CREEPY! Melanie.
Lifeblood by Gena Showalter I was so fortunate to have been contacted by Wunderkind PR to read and review the latest release of Lifeblood, the second book after Firstlife. Firstlife was our Book of the Month last June and it was such a hit. I couldn't wait to continue the series and Lifeblood did not disappoint. It blew me away! These books seem to just get better and better as the story progresses. I will be posting my review sometime this week so stay tuned! This is definitely one of my favorite series and I highly recommend that you should go buy both books ASAP! Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover Ugly Love was the first book that I received for my birthday and I've been looking forward to reading it ever since I finished reading It Ends with Us in February. I already had November 9 by her that I could have read after but after hearing that there will be characters from Ugly Life that make a brief appearance in that one, I just have to read Ugly Love first! Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch Gem & Dixie by Sara Zarr My two wonderful best friend bought me copies of Love & Gelato and Gem & Dixie for my birthday this year! I read through these ones so fast already! There’s a huge spot in my heart for Love & Gelato. 4 years ago, I took classes in Florence for a month and this book made me fall in love with Italy all over again and I’m now just counting the days for Love & Luck to come out. Ireland just so happens to be the next country I would love to visit someday! Gem & Dixie is a much deeper read as we follow two sisters that have a lot of problems at home. Being the opposite of the previous novel, this one broke my heart at times and only made me wish I can hop right into the book and aid them in their journey of finding themselves all while testing each other and their bond. Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray A Million Worlds with You by Claudia Gray A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi My amazing boyfriend knows I have an addiction when it comes to books and since I’ve read A Thousand Pieces of You over the Christmas Holidays, I’ve needed to read the remaining books of this awesome, universe-jumping series! I was so happy to have been given the two books I’ve been missing for my birthday. He also bought me a copy of A Crown of Wishes! I’ve been anticipating this book for a while and though I haven’t read its companion novel that was released first, this one drew me in a lot more. I’ve heard so many good things about this one and how it’s just such a stunning and extraordinary read and that it’s a great book for fans of Caraval. With Caraval being my favorite book of 2017, you can imagine my excitement! The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover I decided to go browse the books at my local Used Book Store and I was surprised to have found a copy of The Night Circus and Maybe Someday, both in perfect condition! I’ve been wanting to read The Night Circus ever since I finished reading Caraval. I really want to read another book that contains magic and the wonderment that is the circus. As for Maybe Someday, It’s actually been on my to-buy list for a while now and I plan on eventually owning all of Colleen Hoover’s books. I’ve been such a fan girl for the past year now and it’s to the point where one of my goals is to have one shelf dedicated for her books and decorations that are related to her work. I was so happy to have found a great deal! More CoHo Books!!! Speaking of Colleen Hoover books and how amazing they are, you wouldn’t believe how giving and supportive her fan base is. Everyone is just so kind and generous. When I picked up my copy of Maybe Someday at the Used Book Store, I’ve decided to show my excitement by posting a picture on her fan page. Someone saw my post and noticed how excited I was to be one book closer to completing my collection and so she asked me which ones were still missing. She then proceeded to surprise me by mailing me 6 more CoHo books! I’m only missing 6 of the 16 books that Colleen Hoover wrote now. I’m so close, guys! I still can’t get over how kind that was. One day, I hope to repay the kindness. Funko Pop Figures! I love to decorate my shelves with these cute figurines. I was able to get two more for my birthday this year. My friends were able to find me one of Dory which now has a place right by all of my Colleen Hoover books. I personally wanted it because in It Ends with Us, Dory is such a big part of the story in its own way and I’m very happy to have it right beside my copy. My brother was also able to find me one of Belle from the new Beauty and the Beast movie! Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite Disney movies and when I saw the magical remake starring Emma Watson, I was blown away. It was such a masterpiece. I’m already starting to stack up some books for my Summer 2017 Book haul! It’s such a great year for books! |
